How to Read a Football Defense
Coach Renner has called plays for 30 years, 23 years as a head coach. He finished his 30-year coaching career with a consecutive game touchdown scoring streak of 141 games, a span of 13-years. During that time his offenses averaged 31.1 points per game and 6+ wins per season. These things were achieved at four different high schools in two different states. And, all four teams became winning playoff teams. Coach Renner used the same method of reading a football defense to call his plays during those 13-years. In this book, How to Read a Football Defense, Coach Renner explains the process of dividing the defense into three parts to read the best area to attack. He uses over 75 diagrams and pictures to show you the common defensive alignments that you must know to be able to read a defense. He explains the role your choice of formations has on how the defense aligns and how that contributes to easily reading the defense. Coach Renner gives you a clear and concise order of how to read a defense to determine the best run or pass play to attack a defender. He details how to read the defensive line, the linebackers, the corners, and the safeties. He gives you specific alignment clues that tell you when to expect a linebacker blitz, a corner blitz or a safety blitz. He also explains how to determine the first level, second level and third level of the defense and what changes in those give you indicators of stunts and blitzes. When you finish reading Coach Renner’s book you will have a good understanding of how to simplify reading a football defense. It will make you feel comfortable reading, calling and designing plays on game day that take advantage of a defender’s and a defensive alignment.

Strength Training for Football
Absolute strength. Sharp acceleration. Explosive power. The modern era of football demands that athletes in all positions are exposed to quality strength training programs that translate strength gains into better performance on the field and limit athlete vulnerability to injury.
Developed with the expertise of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), Strength Training for Football shows you how to design resistance training programs that will help athletes excel on the field. The book will help you understand the specific physical demands of the six groups of positions—offensive and defensive linemen; tight ends, fullbacks, and linebackers; wide receivers and running backs; defensive backs; quarterbacks; and kickers and punters.

Each resistance training exercise consists of a series of photos and a detailed list of primary muscles trained, beginning position and movement phases, breathing guidelines, modifications and variations, and coaching tips to guide you in selecting the right exercises for a program. You’ll also learn how to structure those programs based on the goals and length of each season and for each position.
Backed by the NSCA and the knowledge and experience of successful high school, college, and professional football strength and conditioning professionals, Strength Training for Football is the authoritative guide for creating football-specific resistance training programs to help your athletes optimize their strength and successfully transfer that strength to the field.

The Complete Handbook of Clock Management
Have you ever tried squeezing in a next-to-the-last play, before a field goal kick, and had time expire before you could kick? Or have you tried kicking and missed, from too far away, when you had time to get closer?
Squeezing in a next-to-the-last play, while protecting time for a last play, is one of a football coach's most difficult tasks and the one with the most potential for criticism. You need a system for approaching a moving clock, multiple variables, necessary barriers, ever-changing relativities, and demanding decisions. You need a system with structures, reference points, procedures, and warnings. You need a system for thinking ahead. The Complete Handbook of Clock Management describes such a system in detail.

How to Scout the Offense of Your High School Football Opponent
Coach Renner has coached high school football for 30 years, 319 games to be exact. He has made an offensive scouting report for all 319 games. His 10-step offense scouting process will get you the information you need to know about your opponent’s offensive tendencies. It is not designed to predict what your opponent will do on down and distances. It is designed for you and your players to recognize formation and running back set keys so you can know what play your opponent can or will run from that formation or running back set. That is the key to playing effective defense regardless of the talent you have. Coach Renner provides you with his naming and labeling terminology for 27 tight end formations, 12 no tight end formations and 10 running back sets. Total Football Program Plan
For several years I served at the district office of the Pickens County Schools System in Georgia as the District Athletic Director and the Head Football Coach for Pickens High. After the 2018 Football Season, I was given the opportunity to move to the district office full time and resigned from coaching. Less than a year later, I moved from District Athletic Director to Director of Human Resources for the district. This move has been great, and I really enjoy the job. The only issue with the job is for the first time in decades, I was not involved with Athletics. I started sharing the things I did over the years. I have been blown away at how much it has helped people. This book is unique. It is not something I wrote for you. This is the program manual I kept up with and edited annually to run the football program. Since I worked for many, many years on this and do not use it now, I wanted to share with people that could use it. In no way, shape, or form am I saying this is the “right” way. I just wanted to share our way in hopes it could provide you with an idea or two to help your program.
7 Simple Tips to Increase Your High School Football Program Participation
Successful football teams become long term successful programs because there is a plan to draw the athletes in the building to want to become part of the team. The plan also has a means for the parents to contribute to the program’s success. Coach Bill Renner shares with you 7 simple tips to implement in your football program and build a program that athletes in your school will want to become part of and parents will be your best asset. By implementing these 7 tips the athletes will see a way for them to get better, have an opportunity to contribute, receive recognition of their contributions, feel important as a member of the team and have consistent encouragement from the coaches. The coaches will get a player that is committed to the team, loyal to his teammates, respectful to his coaches and appreciative of the football program. In one of his 7 tips Coach Renner details how to give your parents a positive venue to support the players and coaches in practical ways that a good program needs. Coach Renner has 30-years of coaching high school football and 23-years as a head coach. He developed these tips as a head coach who took over losing programs and transformed them into thinking, acting, working and becoming winners. These are tips that have been used to successfully increase player participation, player improvement, parent support, administration support and to achieve long term success. If implemented, they will have the same results for your program.
How to Plan and Implement a Positive Culture in a High School Football Off-Season Program
A cohesive, communicating and close-knit team develops in the off-season not during the pre-season or in-season. It is too late by then. During Head Football Coach Bill Renner’s 30-year high school coaching career, he was able to change three losing high school football programs into disciplined, winning state playoff teams. The change started with a detailed, structured off-season training program that did not just include the typical off-season training protocol of weightlifting, agilities, running, speed and plyometric training. It included core 4 football specific drills, Gut Check Friday workouts, a plan for recruiting the school for players, and GRIT training that taught players to have passion, perseverance, and self-discipline. Each of these areas is detailed in this book, How to Plan and Implement a Positive Culture in a High School Football Off-Season Training Program. Coach Renner tells you what he did to change the mindset of the players, and, how he trained them to become better football players in the off-season, not just to become bigger, faster, and stronger. Coach Renner gives you the off-season goals that drove player and program improvement. He details the training structure that he used to physically and mentally train the players. This structure includes his training calendar, weightlifting cycle program, agility training, speed and plyometric training, the core 4 football position specific drills and how he incorporated GRIT training in each. He details how he taught players to be position leaders with leadership responsibilities. He describes how he used off-season film review meetings, awards, and lifting clubs to teach passion, perseverance and self-discipline, the GRIT traits. In this book you will learn how Coach Renner built his team’s physical stature, mental toughness, and team culture in the off-season so that it carried over to team and player success during the season. This book shows you how to create a positive team culture and improve the football ability of a team in the off-season.
BASEBALL
How to be a High School Football Offensive Coordinator
No position in football, player, coach or administrative, is more important than the offensive coordinator. He is responsible for the plan that enables his team to score enough to win. When a team cannot score the players, coaches, and fans lose hope of winning. When hope of winning is lost then the team begins a downward spiral. And all four teams became winning playoff teams. Coach Renner used the same offensive coordinator process to coach different offenses to accomplish turning around those high schools. In this book, he details the year-round offensive coordinator responsibilities and process he used to achieve consistent offensive scoring results. He presents topics like “Responsibilities Unique to the Offensive Coordinator”, “Establishing an Offensive Philosophy”, “Deciding to Huddle or Not to Huddle”, “Run Play Organization and Schemes”, “Post-Season Self-Evaluation”, etc. It is not about a particular offense. It is about how to be effective with the design, planning, teaching and coordinating the implementation of an offense. Being able to draw plays and knowing schemes are not enough to score points. Neither is copying someone else’s offense or plays. An offensive coordinator has to have a system that fits his personnel and must be able to attack different opponents without having to change from week to week. Coach Renner shares with you a proven process for an offensive coordinator to follow and plan an offense that can score consistently.
How to Scout the Defense of your High School Football Opponent
Scouting a football defense is vital to the preparation and coaching of offensive football players for a game. Coach Bill Renner outlines a simple and efficient 10-step process to follow when scouting a football defense. The information gathered will provide the coaches and players with a confidence they need to have to play their opponent. Coach Renner has prepared high school offensive game plans for 30 years. He finished his football coaching career with a span of 13 straight years, 142 games, without the offense he was coaching being shutout. Following this simple 10-step process will help a coach in obtaining the knowledge to call offensive plays and know how and why the defense is aligned versus their formation. Play calling becomes more efficient and easier because you are calling plays to attack a player's technique in a defensive alignment you are certain of. If you want to be certain that you are scouting your opponent's defense the right way, getting the right information to help your offense, this book, How to Scout the Defense of Your High School Football Opponent, will give you that plan.
Using Offensive Formations to Dictate Defensive Alignment
I do not believe in calling an offensive play where you don’t know how, why and where the defense will be aligned. The alternative is to call offensive plays hoping the defense will be aligned where you want them to be. But hope is not a strategy. And it does not have to be if you understand that the offensive play caller determines how and where the defense aligns by his use of offensive formations. Using Offensive Formations to Dictate Defensive Alignment is a book that details how to use your offensive formations with no tight ends and tight ends versus various defensive fronts to make a defense align where you want them to. 2x1, 2x2, 3x1 and 3x2 formations with and without tight ends are diagrammed versus 4-3, 3-4, 3-3-5 and Bear defensive fronts. Coach Renner gives you over 70 specific diagrams that detail where each defender in these defense will align. He points out the run weaknesses and pass weaknesses for each defense versus the formations as well. Every defensive alignment detailed in this book was taken from practically applying these formations in game conditions, studying the film and confirming it. Coach Renner details how a change in formation affects a defensive player’s responsibility to your advantage. He shows you the ways to use your formations to the boundary or field with a tight end or without a tight end to manipulate defensive alignment. He also shows you the advantage of having an unbalanced formation as part of your offense. Over a span of 10 years, using this formation philosophy Coach Renner’s offense has passed for 27,117 yards, rushed for 14.022 yards with 255 passing touchdowns and 177 rushing touchdowns. These results were achieved at 4 different high schools in 2 different states, Virginia and North Carolina. This diversity demonstrates that using formations as Coach Renner explains can have the same effect on a defense no matter where it is coached. If you strive to understand how your offense cannot be held captive to a defensive alignment or attack this information is what you need.
And all four teams became winning playoff teams.
You have 25-seconds to get the correct formation, motion, play, and adjustment into your offense. It is 4th down with the game, and the season, on the line. On top of all of this, your Quarterback was knocked out of the game, along with your starting Right Guard. There also happens to be 10,000 “assistant coaches” in the stands shouting what they think you should do.
Being an offensive coordinator is difficult. Spending the time needed to ensure your team is ready for any situation is imperative. You need to have enough ready, but not too much. It is important that you have all the “If-Then” scenarios played out before the game begins.
The Offensive Coordinator Workbook is the place to go to help you work through all that goes into:
Building a system, Scouting opponents, Deciding on a plan of action, Organizing your staff and practice schedules, Calling a game, Making in-game adjustments, And more…
This workbook is filled with templates and examples to help any offensive coordinator work through the thought process of installing and implementing an Offensive System, not just a collection of plays.
The Offensive Coordinator's Football Handbook
You have just been appointed offensive coordinator for your school. What now? It is extremely important for a potential offensive coordinator to clearly and specifically understand what his role will be as a team's offensive coordinator. The underlying basis of this statement is to help a coordinator, or would-be coordinator, be sure that he is fully aware of his role as that team s offensive coordinator, as designated by the head coach. Without question, the best time to do this is before the would-be offensive coordinator accepts the all-important position. In other words, it is essential that he knows what he is getting into when he accepts the position. This is the definitive handbook for the coach in that scenario. This book goes in-depth to deliver the comprehensive handbook the football coach is looking for in order to be successful from day 1.

Divided into three sections, this unusual handbook, now in its third edition, offers Routine Calls, which deal with scenarios and rules that typically come up in games and deal with clear-cut rules—fair and foul, strike zone questions, and the like.
The next section, Basic Situations, deals with umpiring matters and rules that are just a bit more unusual or, for the casual fan, obscure. Interference and obstruction calls, for example, don’t come up too often, but they remain standard stuff involving rules that umps and many fans know quite well.
In the final section, Obscure Rules and Situations, you will be presented with what many baseball people call “knotty” problems. Here, you will be asked questions involving the complex infield fly rule and other arcane matters. This section, then, is the ultimate test of your umpiring skills and knowledge.
Most of the situations in You’re the Umpire come from real games, such as the time a fastball from Randy Johnson killed a bird in flight and what the umps did regarding that pitch, but some scenarios are made up to illustrate specific points or rules. Test yourself against your friends or against the iconic baseball rulebook. It’s a challenge and it’s fun.
The Baseball Coaching Bible
Much more than a book on skills, strategies, or drills, The Baseball Coaching Bible represents a landmark work for the sport. The Art of Catching
An aspiring baseball catcher could do himself no greater favor than acquiring this manual. Whereas the techniques of hitting, pitching, and other baseball positions are well covered by valuable instruction books, the techniques of catching arguably the most difficult and most crucial position of all have not been covered well at all.
Brent Mayne s The Art of Catching: The Secrets and Techniques of Baseball s Most Demanding Position changes all that in a single stroke. The book s lucid, concise but comprehensive, and highly readable approach puts at your fingertips the wisdom and skills of a successful pro.
Brent Mayne played major league ball for sixteen seasons (1989 2004), most of them with the Kansas City Royals. He earned a reputation for his handling of pitchers, effective plate blocking, and strong arm. Enjoying success both behind the plate and at it, he batted .301 in two consecutive seasons (1999 2000). Mayne caught a no-hitter pitched by Bret Saberhagen in 1991, and he also has the distinction of being the only catcher in the twentieth century to have won a game as a pitcher.
A hard-working, consummate pro, Mayne knows his position like the back of his hand and has a gift for communicating his knowledge and experience enthusiastically.
The Art of Catching begins by sketching a quick, informative evolution of the position and its all-important glove, along with offering some illuminating personal history. After these preliminaries, Mayne turns his attention to the heart of the matter: the fundamentals of catching. Stressing the absolute importance of posture, he covers a variety of stances and body positions. Important techniques such as glove mechanics, blocking, throwing to bases, back picking, and pitchouts are also covered in detail. Mayne offers concise summaries of proper methods, such as: Pitchout footwork with a right-handed batter is: jab with right foot (before pitcher releases the ball), step left, catch the ball, then right step, left step, throw. By practicing such mechanics until they become second nature, catchers will master their craft.
Subsequent chapters of The Art of Catching cover crucial topics such as calling games, working with pitchers, handling pop flies, making plays at the plate (without injuring one s self!), and drills. For Mayne, it is practice and experience, above all, that distinguish professional-caliber players from wannabes. As he points out: One trait common to all the players at the top is that they've played a ton of baseball, more baseball in fact than about 99.9 percent of the population.
For catchers, Mayne sees the bullpen as the best place for productive drills. Instead of viewing time there as tedious, catchers should use it productively to hone their skills and to assess the strengths and weaknesses of their pitching staff. Mayne s overview of drills does, however, come with some wise cautionary words that, again, place the emphasis on correct mechanics: Practice does not make perfect; practice makes permanent. In other words, if you have poor technique when you practice, that is what you will take out to the game. Readers of this book will learn the right techniques.
Each chapter of The Art of Catching concludes with a section of key points for handy reference. In addition, the book features numerous invaluable illustrations and photos, which clearly reinforce the teachings of the text, thought-provoking quotations, and a handy index. For coaches and those who want to distinguish themselves as baseball catchers, The Art of Catching: The Secrets and Techniques of Baseball s Most Demanding Position is an essential, self-recommending title.
Baseball Strategies
Some books teach coaches and players what to do; this also explains why. Developed by an all-star cast of coaches selected by the American Baseball Coaches Association, Baseball Strategies is the most comprehensive resource ever written on the tactical aspects of the game. Providing the content are 18 of the game's top strategists, including several coaches whose teams have totaled more than 1,000 wins and have won national championships.
Meet every decision-making challenge, from setting the most effective lineup at the plate and in the field to deciding what play to call and when to call it in tight game situations. Should a runner be sent on a 2-2 pitch with one out? Should a hitter be walked to allow for a force-out even if the next batter is an RBI leader? When should a pitcher hold a runner on base from the stretch position or pitch from a more comfortable full windup? The analyses and answers to all of these questions and many more can be found in this book.

In part I, you'll learn the specifics of offense, from determining the hitting lineup to studying the strengths and weaknesses of the opposing pitcher and defense. The contributors to the offensive side of the game include Itch Jones, Mike Gillespie, Danny Hall, and Mark Johnson. In part II, experts such as Bob Bennett and John Winkin explore pitching from every angle, including strategies for shutting down hitters, stopping baserunners, and fielding the position.
In Parts III and Parts IV, you'll learn better defensive strategies for fine-tuning your strategic approach from George Horton, Jim Morris, and Bobo Brayton, just to name a few.
Take a big tactical lead on your opponent. From position-specific responsibilities to situation-specific options to adjusting to the level of competition to altering your game plan in the middle innings, Baseball Strategies covers all the bases to give you a winning advantage in thinking the game.

The Baseball Player's Guide to Hitting Like a Pro
Every good hitter is fighting a battle… Do you know what yours is and how to turn it to your advantage on the field?
3 out of every 4 appearances at the plate result in an out. You probably know this… so why are you doubting your skills?
Self-doubt is natural in any sport, but in baseball, it can be detrimental to getting out of a hitting slump -- yet it affects so many players -- pros and weekenders alike.
Former Colorado Rockies pitcher Jason Marquis knew this only too well. “You’re out on the mound not trusting your stuff, waiting for the next bad thing to happen, instead of going out there and grabbing the bull by the horns,” he said.
And the same issue affects hitters: as soon as you start to doubt yourself, your approach is shaken, and you’re stuck in a cycle of misses.
You’re focusing on what you’re doing wrong rather than what you can do to improve your game -- and that isn’t going to help you.
Perhaps you think you need to work on your mechanics. Perhaps you’re doubting your fitness or worrying that you should be training more.
But more likely than not, none of this is true.
In this book, you'll find a clear guide to improving hitting techniques without focusing on mechanics.

Applied Technology in Pitching: Metrics, Development, and Strategies
This book is written for the advanced college to pro level pitcher, coach and scout. It refers to advanced techniques for understanding and applying the latest in Doppler radar ball tracking technology, and advanced pitching strategies. This isn’t meant to be a physics book or a research paper. The focus of this book is on real world applications using Doppler metrics for player development and scouting, not outcome results statistics.
Topics center on pitch analysis, development and design, batter and batted ball analysis, Magnus spin, Bullet spin, Seams Imbalance Laminar break, Seams Imbalance Turbulent break, sequencing, advanced strike zone analysis, and more. Many of the charts and images in this book are a few of the basic charts generated from Pitchgrader ™ software. With over 3 years of development and real-world use, Pitchgrader has hundreds of charts, graphs, heatmaps, and more advanced metrics and 3D baseball analysis software that is currently used by MLB teams and top D1 college baseball teams to interpret and apply their ball tracking data.
Sabermetrics generally describes results. The new type of data analyzed today is more of process than results. It’s not “stats”, but interrelated data for multiple viable combinations. Kinematics, kinetics, kinesiology; we call this process data, Kinemetrics.
There is a tendency for many to evaluate pitching and batting in terms of absolute measured values. This is understandable given all the absolute values the machines generate. But numbers can be deceiving if you focus only on numbers, especially a single metric, a small group of metrics, or worse, the wrong metrics. This book helps you avoid those pitfalls and helps you learn how to apply this data towards better player development, advance scouting, and amateur scouting.

Baseball Psychology: The Gray Matter Factor
"Baseball Psychology, the Gray Matter Factor," concerns methods for the young player, little league through college, to combat the mental turmoil that the game of baseball can create. Young players and their coaches spend endless hours in the development of physical skills while spending very little time or effort in the development of the mental fundamentals. This book attempts to give ideas for both players and coaches to assist in the "gray matter" growth of the athlete. To become a proficient athlete, it will need to acquire both physical and mental skills.
This book, "The Second Inning," is a continuation of the original book, and should be a great compliment to what can be found there. The young athlete can learn ways to fend off fear of a situation, to combat complex developments that the game will create suddenly, and the importance of using the mind to advance to the next level. The importance of having a plan of attack, talking yourself through adverse situations, and seeing yourself follow that plan to a successful conclusion is a highlight that this book looks for. The ability to dream of a success, walk yourself through it by talking yourself through it can become a major advantage to an athlete's rise to the top performance.
Fear in sports, becomes he biggest block toward the young athlete's progress. In this book, you will find methods to combat and overcome this fear and earn to develop respect for each difficult challenging moment.

Thinking Basketball
Are top scorers really the most valuable players? Are games decided in the final few minutes? Does the team with the best player usually win? Thinking Basketball challenges a number of common beliefs about the game by taking a deep dive into the patterns and history of the NBA. Explore how certain myths arose while using our own cognition as a window into the game's popular narratives. New basketball concepts are introduced, such as power plays, portability and why the best player shouldn't always shoot. Discover how the box score can be misleading, why "closers" are overrated and how the outcome of a game fundamentally alters our memory. Behavioral economics, traffic paradoxes and other metaphors highlight this thought-provoking insight into the NBA and our own thinking. A must-read for any basketball fan -- you'll never view the sport, and maybe the world, the same again.
Coaching Basketball: 30 Set Plays
Why the 1-4 High? Why run all of your set plays, quick hitters or entry plays from a 1-4 high set? Good question. Here are the reasons this alignment is great for all set plays: Less is more. This one set keeps things simple for your players. It creates excellent spacing. Offense is all about good spacing. This alignment creates good scoring opportunities for every position. It is easy to create plays for any type of shot necessary from this alignment. The plays can be run to either side of the court simply by running the mirror image of the play. It is very easy to get into from a numbered fastbreak system. It denies the defense from establishing its defensive priorities, making this alignment difficult to defend from the onset. What are defensive priorities? Regardless of the type of defense run, most traditional defensive systems want to establish the following priorities: Be able to apply tremendous pressure on the ball and provide help to the on-the-ball defender. Be able to provide help in any situation. Protect the rim and low post areas. Force the ball out of the middle to one side to establish a ball side and help side, allowing the defense to outnumber the offense 5-3 by virtue of the two help defenders. Defend two offensive players with one defender if possible (usually a zone defense). Establish good inside positioning for defensive rebound coverage. Clog the lane area with help defenders to prevent lane penetration via pass, cut or dribble; low post entry passes; backdoor cuts for lay-ups. Some of the ways the 1-4 high alignment prevents the defense from establishing its priorities include preventing the defense from being able to establish a help side defense, forcing the defense away from the lane area and rim, opening the area up for penetration of one form or another, and requiring the defense to guard each offensive player, including the ball, with only one defender, and operating the offense from the middle of the court to initiate the attack. In addition to the advantages the 1-4 high set denies the defense, it is versatile due to the fact all of the plays can be run as mirror images. Any play depicted being run to the right-hand side of the court can be run in its mirror image on the left-hand side of the court. This short book contains 30 plays to attack man-to-man defenses, zone defenses, to obtain 3-point shots, low post shots, and on-the-ball screens to create penetration opportunities. These simple plays are an excellent way to score after a time out, a dead ball or as an entry to motion or other offenses.
Basketball Mechanics
The primary objective of this book is to examine basketball movements from the game’s top performers in competition. To the author’s knowledge, this is a novel concept in that no book has ever used match-play to investigate the mechanical demands imposed on athletes in the sporting activity of basketball. Hopefully, after this book the reader will be equipped with the knowledge to create models for movement expressions around tactical situations in basketball.
This information can be extremely useful for multiple parties involved in the development of basketball athletes. The first objective of the book will be a brief overview of biomechanical principles and how this pertains to basketball. The second objective of the book will dissect specific game situations and examine common denominators among the game’s best movers. The ultimate goal of this is to bridge the gap between athletes and coaches for the overall improvement of our sport.

Coaching the System: A Complete Guide to Basketball's Most Explosive Style of Play
"If you are interested in Coaching the System, you must be either desperate or crazy!" At least that's what people told authors Gary Smith and Doug Porter when they began investigating this revolutionary style of play almost a decade ago. Ignoring the critics, they went on to coach the two highest scoring teams in men's and women's college basketball history: the University of Redlands, California (132.4 ppg), and Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois (104.1 ppg). From its origins as the Sonny Allen Numbered Fast Break, to Paul Westhead’s Loyola Marymount up-tempo game, the System has been around for decades. But when Grinnell College’s David Arseneault added platoon substitution patterns and hockey-style short shifts, placing a priority on creating three-point looks for his “preferred shooters,” the System truly came into its own. Smith and Porter learned the Grinnell version of the System from Arseneault himself, adapting it to fit their situations coaching men’s and women’s programs. In the past decade their teams set 32 NCAA and NAIA records between them, including most 100-point games in a season (Redlands-23; Olivet-24). Olivet also holds national records for defensive turnovers (36.3 per game) assists (23.8 per game), and three pointers made in a season (509, 15.6 per game). Redlands owns college basketball records (all levels) for field goal attempts (110.3 per game), and three-pointers made (23.8 per game). Now you can learn every detail of this devastating full court run-and-press attack that allows you to dictate tempo and force your opponents out of their normal game plan, capturing the imagination of your players and community, and making coaching fun again! You’ll learn exactly how and why the System works, how to adapt it to fit your personnel, suggestions for conditioning players, organizing System practices, and even ways to respond to the inevitable criticisms that come with playing the game this far “outside the box.” Other chapters offer complete descriptions of the Redlands Attack (Coach Smith’s variation of the Grinnell offense), the LMU Attack (which Westhead popularized and used to advance to the NCAA regional finals in 1990), and the Olivet Attack (Coach Porter’s hybrid version of the LMU and Dribble-Drive offenses). Finally, you'll learn System defensive principles, terminology, and how to cover every conceivable press attack and press-breaker alignment. Also included are 57 drills and over 300 diagrams to illustrate System offense and defense, providing you with a complete blueprint for “Coaching the System!”

Fastball Fitness: The Art and Science of Training to Throw with Real Velocity
By Tom House
Welcome to the Complete Softball Coaches Manual Version 2.0!! . What's new in version 2.0?? I've added a ton of information on fastpitch pitching mechanics and hitting mechanics. I have also updated the throwing mechanics and added a great throwing warm up! There are also 30 brand new hitting drills, most of which you can do on your own! And everything that you loved about version 1.0 is still there! What will you find inside and how should you use this complete manual? This manual covers mostly softball related topics (and I use the term softball throughout), but much of what’s inside can be used for baseball too. Other than the major differences in pitching, and the things you have to change with 60’ bases vs. 70’-90’ bases, much of the two sports can be taught the exact same way. Inside you will still find a list of all of the defensive positions and a complete list of all of the responsibilities that position has. Some are the same, but many are very different and unique. And some are very different if the player is left or right-handed. All of that is covered in great step by step detail. Everything from a First basemen fielding a bunt or scooping a bad throw, to a Shortstop’s double play footwork at Second base, to an Outfielder playing a ball off the fence or making a Do or Die Crow Hop throw home to stop the winning run. There’s also a complete guide to playing Catcher that covers everything from framing to blocking to throwing runners out. And it goes way beyond the mechanics of each position’s responsibilities. I also cover things like Sprinting mechanics, Pitching and Throwing mechanics, Position based throws, Catching a throw, Fielding fly balls and ground balls. I cover Hitting, slapping and bunting mechanics too, along with the mental approach to hitting. There’s great pitch calling advice, a bat size chart, some great examples of signs and signals for offense and defense and more! Consider it a complete guide to everything you need to need to know to teach the game of softball (and most of baseball too!). And these aren’t just my opinions either. It’s a list compiled of what’s been proven to work based on my 19 years of coaching competitive youth softball (up to High School varsity) and competitive youth baseball. I have also taken many tips and tools from World Champion College Softball Coaches and Major League Baseball Players/Coaches. What’s the best way to use it? Well in the front you will find a table of contents that is also an outline of everything inside the manual. You can use that to find what you’re looking for inside, or just use it as a reminder of things you want to cover at practice or a private lesson. Then inside, everything is broken down into a very detailed step by step checklist that is easy to follow and explain to your players. This manual is great for coaches of any experience level, whether you just volunteered to help out with the coach pitch team or you’re the head Varsity Coach. And it’s great for kids of any skill level too. If you think your players aren’t ready to learn about the ideal bat speed or attack angle, then skip it until they’re older. But it’s in there when they’re ready. But if you want to teach your 10-year-old player how to slap hit or how to dive and get up, it’s in there with easy-to-follow step by step directions. I’ve even included about 40 drills and games that I’ve come up with and borrowed over the years to help keep practice interesting!!If your heart is in the right place, you can’t go wrong coaching. This guide will help you let the players reach their fullest potential.

Volleyball Fundamentals
Learning to play volleyball has never been more effective—or more fun—than with Volleyball Fundamentals, Second Edition. Parents, coaches, and instructors of volleyball skill courses will immediately benefit from the solid foundational information and practical tips on how to teach every aspect of the sport. Players will enjoy using this resource because they will learn by doing—spending less time reading and more time engaged in playing the game.
Volleyball Fundamentals begins by teaching the basics that get players ready to take the court. The book covers positioning and the importance of reading the opposing players, communicating with teammates, and preparing for movement on the court. The guidance on formations and rotations will help students get an immediate sense of where they belong on the court. Clear instructions, accompanied by illustrations, for drills help players master specific skills such as serving, receiving a serve, setting, attacking, blocking, and digging. Each skill is introduced through a simple four-step sequence:
• You Can Do It: The skill is introduced with sequential instructions and accompanying photographs.
• More to Choose and Use: Variations and extensions of the primary skill are covered.
• Take It to the Court: Readers learn how to apply the skill in game play.
• Give It a Go: These sections provide direct experiences—such as drills, small-sided games, and six-versus-six gamelike activities—for the reader to use to gauge, develop, and hone the skill.
Throughout the book, teaching cues offer advice for avoiding common mistakes. New to this edition is a chapter on how to effectively use the libero position (defensive specialist) in game play. Sections on offensive and defensive tactics, scoring systems, rules, and modified games have also been updated to make the game as easy for you to teach as it is for your students to learn.
As part of the Sports Fundamentals Series, Volleyball Fundamentals will help you teach the basic skills and tactics of the game so that your players can compete on the court in no time at all.
Thinking Volleyball

In Thinking Volleyball, he goes beyond the development of motor skills to provide a unique cerebral look at how athletes learn. Hebert also introduces the strategies behind his reading defense approach, which will give your team an advantage against any opponent. Regardless of how talented your players are, a positive environment that includes a solid mutual trust among everyone involved with the program is vital for your program both on and off the court.
To take your program to the next level, step inside the mind of a legendary coach and never stop learning. Thinking Volleyball is your resource to developing your program, your players, and yourself.

Coaching Volleyball: A Survival Guide for Your First Season
Here’s the thing--coaching a volleyball team is pretty straightforward. ONCE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DOING.
If you’ve got to muddle through your first season, trying tactics you read about online and switching up your coaching style halfway through the season, I’ll tell you right now… you’re not going to enjoy it as much as you could have.
If you’ve signed up to coach, it’s likely that you’ve researched drills, serve receive formations, and rules. But I’ve got to tell you something…
It’s not the drills that you run which will make or break your season! It’s how you manage your team.
This is NOT a volleyball drill book. There are tons of volleyball drills online (most are for free) that you can refer to throughout your season as you’re planning practice.
This book is about running a team in a way that seems like you know what you’re doing (even if you have no idea).
Inside you’ll learn:
-
What your coaching philosophy is.
-
The main roles and responsibilities for both head coaches and assistant coaches.
-
How to run tryouts (including skills to test for and how to let players know they made the team).
-
The practice design template I use for 85% of my season.
-
How to keep stats and then USE the data to improve performance.
-
How to plan for an end-of-season party.
-
Getting ready for year two (because after a successful first season, you’ll be hooked)!
Throughout the book I also share personal stories to help you understand what you might encounter… whether that’s players bonding over their favorite color, or how to recognize burnout before it turns your athletes away from the game.
I wrote this book because it was the information I wanted when I was getting started, but couldn’t find anywhere! I’ve coached all over the United States and can tell you that while playing styles differ, rules change, techniques and tactics evolve… being a prepared coach is one thing which will NEVER go out of style!

Basic Soccer Drills for Kids: 150 Soccer Coaching and Training Drills, Tactics, and Strategies
Soccer is the most popular team sport in the world. It is perfect for kids to play. It is safe, simple and the skills required can be easily acquired. Becoming an expert player requires high levels of dedication, natural athleticism and innate skills. Any girl or boy can take to the sport and find enjoyment at their own level.
It is for this reason that the game is escalating to such a rapid extent in the US. And it is why the need for coaches and players is growing continuously and rapidly. After all, who would not turn down the chance for their kids to keep physically fit, to allow their natural competitiveness to be channeled in an organized way, to be kept busy in a manner that is both productive and worthwhile? In addition to this, soccer develops dexterity, problem solving, collaboration, friendship, respect, self-discipline, team spirit and sportsmanship. All of which are life skills that are best acquired young.
But there is so much to learn for youngsters who wish to become soccer players at a good club level. Shooting, defending, pressing, passing, controlling the ball, the laws of the game (even professionals struggle at times with the offside law as do, it sometimes seems, the referees themselves). And more important than all of these, children must learn about the spirit of soccer. Fair play and the sportsmanship mentioned above. This is especially so for today's youngsters facing all the pressures of growing up in a challenging world driven by the twin pressures of consumerism and social media.
Soccer Coaching: A Step-by-Step Guide on How to Lead Your Players
There are complimentary YouTube videos to help you follow along for several chapters in this book.
Ever get a little overwhelmed by trying to think of what to teach your team in practice?
Wish you had a book that was quick to read that doubled your confidence by pointing out the most important things to focus on with your team?
Want to learn the #1 thing to build the bond between you and a player that takes less than 5 seconds.
Ever have difficult players or parent(s) of a player and wish you knew the steps how to handle them in a way that is a win-win for both parties?
If any of these situations describe where you are at, you are not alone. Working with the directors of your club, managing the expectations of your players’ parents, and making an enjoyable experience for the players while also wanting to win is not an easy feat. I am impressed that you are taking up this sometimes-thankless position as you are making a difference in your players’ lives, even if they do not verbally tell you.
As the coach, you are the leader of the team and should lead by example. The harder you work, the harder your team will work. There is not a perfect way to coach and it normally takes time to find the style that works best for you and motivates your players. This book will help you in that process.
The Soccer Sessions Book: 87 Prepared Practice Sessions for Coaching Youth Players
With this book, soccer coaches need not scramble to prepare their practice sessions because they will find a wide variety of training sessions for developing their youth players right here. And the sessions are all adaptable, making them suitable for players ages 10 and up, at any playing ability.
In the book, the reader will find coherent, structured 60-to 90-minute sessions plans. The work of constructing training sessions has already been done. The clearly defined session titles enable the reader to quickly identify the ideal training session, its purpose, and its proposed outcomes.
All the sessions facilitate progressive learning, enabling coaches to develop their players successfully. Also included with each session are questions and challenges meant to help the coach monitor and assess playersÂ’ progress.
Deliberate Soccer Practice: 50 Passing & Possession Soccer Exercises
The ‘Deliberate Soccer Practice’ series shows coaches how to evolve their coaching sessions. It aims to ensure that players are ‘cognitively engaged’, with all players involved all of the time. It is about offering exercises which have players actively making regular contact with the ball, making decisions, changing decisions depending on what is happening, and moving to adapt to what the ball and other players are doing. That is the real game after all!
Aimed at football coaches of all levels, but with a particular emphasis on coaches who work with youth players, 50 Passing & Possession Football Exercises to Improve Decision-Making is comprised of 20 Technical Practices and 30 Possession Practices. They are carefully designed to be adaptable to suit the needs of the players you work with; to challenge them and give them decisions to make. The sessions look to make soccer complex and realistically difficult – no passing in queues from one cone to the next with no interference. Crucially, the exercises offer a means to accelerate player development effectively and enjoyably.

Coaching Elementary Soccer: The easy, fun way to coach soccer for 6, 7, 8, 9, & 10-year-olds
Coaching elementary kids at soccer is a little more complicated than coaching preschoolers, but with the approach detailed in this book, any caring adult can do it well. Building on the approach in his popular “Coaching Little Kid Soccer,” Coach Bryan Gilmer sets out his step-by-step method for leading teams of kindergarten through third-grade soccer players in a volume slim enough to be read in a single sitting but with enough ideas to keep your team growing at its own pace over several soccer seasons. Coach Bryan takes you step by step through running practices and managing games, all with an emphasis on age-appropriate activities and strategies that keep children continuously engaged and cooperative -- and help them win. His approach ensures that time on the soccer field is fun and challenging for the kids while teaching them the underlying principles of dribbling, shooting, teamwork, and offensive and defensive soccer strategy. The focus on helping each player make sound decisions in every role on the team helps children develop as well-rounded players and achieve success now. And the concepts they learn will continue to serve them well if they choose to advance to higher levels of soccer. Coach Bryan’s sensitivity to the developmental abilities and needs of this age group sets this guide apart from the dozens of other general youth soccer coaching guides. You’ll learn how to manage behavior, injuries, and frustration and to encourage resiliency, positive perseverance, cooperation, sportsmanship, and a healthy lifelong love of exercise.

CROSS COUNTRY
Developing a High School Cross Country Program: A Guide for Coaches and Runners
Developing a High School Cross Country Program: A Guide for Coaches and Runners has been a work in progress over a lifetime of coaching. During Coach Power's years working at North East High School with Pennsylvania Hall of Fame Coach, Ted Miller, both coaches dreamed of writing a book to share with other coaches and runners explaining the distance program they created. After 25 years at North East, Coach Power struck out on his own moving to Pawling, New York where he brought his knowledge of distance running to a school that had not had a running program in over 20 years. While at Pawling Coach Power led his teams to numerous championships including a State Title. He also developed two individual State Champions. The system created by Power and Miller proved to be successful. "Over the years," Coach Power says, "I have been blessed to work with incredible athletes, confide with gifted assistant coaches, and discussed my thoughts with other successful head coaches. All of these interactions helped Coach Power develop a positive high school cross country coaching philosophy. This book is geared to those who push the limits and to those who ask their athletes to push the limits. It is primarily a book about how to build a running program in a small school setting but certainly even coaches from large schools may be able to glean some important suggestions which can apply to large school settings as well. The book will address the "X's" and "O's" of conditioning, but the central message concerns building a program from the ground up. The last section of the book traces a championship season with the intent of giving readers an inside look at how one team achieved their ultimate dream, a State Championship Title.

WRESTLING
Choice: The Most Underutilized Asset in Wrestling (Train Your Brain)
Question:
Who would win in a fight between a lion and a shark?
Some would say the lion as he rules the land.
Some would say the shark, the predator of the sea.
Answer:
It would depend on where the fight would take place - either on land or in the sea.
Imagine if the shark chose to fight the lion on land.
Or if the lion chose to fight the shark in the sea?
Sounds silly right.
But it happens in almost every wrestling match.
Take that same thought process and apply it in every wrestling match that you wrestle.
You have qualities, moves, and positions where you rule.
Your opponent will have different qualities, moves, and positions where he will dominate.
The victor will be the wrestler who was able to wrestle in the environment which best suits him, be it land or sea.
If you rule the land, wrestle on the land.
If you rule the sea, wrestle in the sea.
Get to your best position and wrestle there.

Coaching Wrestling Successfully
Dan Gable redefined the term wrestling champion, setting a new standard of excellence for athletes and coaches. Defeated only once throughout his high school and college wrestling careers and unscored upon in his 1972 Olympic gold medal performance, Gable didn't just win on the mat, he dominated his opponents in a relentless, physical style.
Gable brought that same competitive toughness and determination to mastering coaching-and the championships came, year after year. In the 21 seasons he was head coach, his University of Iowa teams won 15 national championships and 21 Big Ten championships.
Now, in Coaching Wrestling Successfully, Gable presents the blueprint to becoming a wrestling champion. He covers every facet of his formula for success-a guiding philosophy, proven motivational tools, guidelines for proper nutrition and weight control, daily and year-round practice plans, effective instructional methods, correct wrestling technique, and winning match strategies.
Coaches will find fascinating Gable's formula for success and anecdotes involving his handling of teams and individuals. Athletes will benefit from the folkstyle, freestyle, and Greco-Roman moves and drills. Wrestling fans will enjoy the stories involving Gable and many of the greatest names in the sport. And every reader will marvel at how the master of motivation pushed himself and his wrestlers beyond their perceived potential.
Gable made sure that Coaching Wrestling Successfully achieved the same standard of excellence that he demanded of himself as a wrestler and a coach. The result is a championship effort, full of lessons from the legend, from cover to cover.
A Season on the Mat: Dan Gable and the Pursuit of Perfection
For twenty-one years, Dan Gable's Iowa Hawkeyes dominated wrestling to an extent rarely seen in any sport: twenty-one consecutive Big 10 titles and fifteen national championships. In A Season on the Mat, award-winning reporter Nolan Zavoral explores Iowa's storied wrestling program and Gable's record of excellence in an unprecedented, intimate look at the man and his methods during his final season as a head coach.
A Season on the Mat chronicles the dramatic 1996-97 season, in which Gable led his team -- far from his most talented -- to a record-breaking performance at the national championship, at which it scored the most points in collegiate wrestling history. Zavoral takes the reader behind the scenes into the stifling heat of the wrestling room, where young men from places like Rock Falls, Illinois, or Philip, South Dakota, sacrifice everything they have just to be a part of the Hawkeye program.
From his difficult upbringing, interrupted by the tragedy of his sister's brutal murder, through the single defeat that haunts him to this day, to the ups and downs of his phenomenal coaching career, Gable has come to symbolize to many all that is special about this demanding, elemental sport. Part biography, part chronicle, part portrait of this unique subculture, A Season on the Mat is the best and most thorough look at one of the most important and most overlooked figures in American athletics.
